NLC News: NLC Bioblitz July 2021

The Nantucket Land & Water Council has teamed up with the Linda Loring Nature Foundation to host its second annual Bioblitz on Nantucket.  Join us in documenting as many species as possible on Nantucket via the FREE and user-friendly iNaturalist app – look for our Bioblitz called “NLC & LLNF Bioblitz 2021” under “Projects”.

This July, head out to any location on the island with your smartphone, snap a picture of the species you see, and upload to iNaturalist. You can document nearly any living thing you find – fish, crabs, insects, flowers, trees, etc. Nantucket Land & Water Council Associates and volunteers will also host a Saturday how-to session at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation at 110 Eel Point Rd – to be held July 17 from 10am – 12pm.  This “How To Bioblitz” session is free and open to the public – come explore with us!

In 2020, we documented over 500 observations of over 300 unique species.  Our goal for 2021 is over 1000 observations and over 500 unique species.  Help us meet this goal by downloading the iNaturalist app today and get out there and observe!

As a special challenge this summer, we challenge you to seek out rare and endangered species on the island. Prizes will be awarded to participants who observe the following: 1) rare/endangered species, 2) migrant species, and 3) species not yet recorded in Nantucket County.

By taking part in our Bioblitz challenge, not only are you engaging with our beautiful open spaces and varied habitats, you are fostering a love for the outdoors for yourself, your children, and joining a community of like-minded environmentalists.  Thank you for participating and supporting the Nantucket Land & Water Council! Stay tuned to our Instagram and Facebook (@nantucketlandcouncil) for updates on this year’s Bioblitz!

A special thank you to our island’s conservation organizations Nantucket Island Land Bank, Nantucket Conservation Foundation, and Linda Loring Nature Foundation, for their dedication to protecting and preserving open space island-wide.
